The heyday of the coachbuilt luxury cars was back before WWII. As car became more complex machines the practice of having each body custom made became even more difficult and expensive. But for those willing to pay, it can still be done, and some of the oldest names in coachbuilding are still in operation. So when architect and home builder Bob Gittleman decided that he wanted something different for his car, it was possible to make that happen. Gittleman went to Chinetti Motors in New York, owned by legendary Italian racing driver Luigi Chinetti, and talked to Luigi’s son, Luigi Jr. (who went by “Coco”).
Gittleman simply asked for “something different” out of his car and Coco took it from there. He had always been fascinated by British coachbuilding and shooting brakes in particular, but also with Italian sports cars . So then used as the base was a then-new1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 , which was then sent to Panther Westwinds in Surrey, England for the coachwork. It is a very well executed job, and it has earned the car a certain degree of fame over the years. Not everyone is crazy about it, but it seems someone atFerrari thought a Ferrari shooting brake was a good idea, because we now have the2012 Ferrari FF .
Just trying to keep all of the different varieties of theFerrari 250 straight is a fairly daunting task. There were 23 different varieties, but each of these is usually further subdivided and there are versions of the car that were only produced in single-digit numbers. But even among those incredibly rare versions of the car, this one still manages to stand out. It is a 250 GT short-wheelbase from 1962 with special one-off bodywork by Bertone for Nuccio Bertone himself. The car belonged to Nuccio, but he used it extensively as a show car, showing off the coachbuilding abilities of his company.
The car has changed hands a number of times, and at one point was used as a daily driver in California for a full 13 years. It has since been fully restored and is in absolutely pristine condition. It was recently auctioned by Gooding and Co., where it became one of the most expensive cars ever sold at public auction. Enzo Ferrari was so impressed by the car that when Bertone sent him a Christmas present that year, he sent back a letter praising the bodywork of the Speciale and signed it “Your – if you will permit me – friend, Enzo Ferrari.”
The Dino brand, created by Ferrari for models with engines with fewer than 12 cylinders, spanned from 1968 to 1976, and included cars such as the iconic 246 GTS. Now it looks like Ferrari is going to resurrect the name for an entry-level sports car. Rumors about Ferrariplanning to develop a V-6-powered sports car have been flying around for some years now. It took Maranello a lot to admit such a model is underway, but Sergio Marchionne finally came clean in June 2015, tellingAutocar that a V-6 Ferrari is "not a question of if but when." Two months have passed since then and our spy photographers caught a 458 -based mule in the wild. According to them, the car didn’t sound like the usual V-8. What’s more, the mule was followed by a 488 that didn’t sound like it was using a turbocharged V-8 either, but rather the turbo V-6 used in the newly revealed 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia QV.
Could this mean that Ferrari is finally testing the sports car that will revive the Dino nameplate? This seems to be the likely scenario, especially since the 458 mule sports a number of features hinting toward a new exterior design and a different powerplant.
Of course, we’re nearly three years away from seeing the real deal in the metal and it will probably take at least 12 months until we get to see a pre-production body on that mule, but that won’t stop me from speculating what this Ferrari might bring to the market. A few days ago, there was a pretty cool picture gallery released featuring the Ferrari 599XX Evo at the opening round to the European Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli at Monza. Today, Youtube userShmee150 is offering up an equally cool video shot at the same event.
The stars of his video are a series of 599XX, 599XX Evo, and FXX models presented at the event. It shows behind the scenes shots and shots in and around the paddock before the cars headed out and blasted away. These are coupled with numerous clips of flybys, epic downshifts, the glowing brakes, and plenty of eye candy!
Their next stop was at California’s Laguna Seca circuit, a few miles from the attractions of Monterey, which hosted the third Ferrari Racing Days of the season on May 20, 2012.
Ferrari has unveiled a very impressive tribute video to Mille Miglia 2012 - one of Italy’s most famous road rallies. For Enzo Ferrari this was "the most wonderful race in the world." But the times and the ways change, because the last real Mille Miglia was held in 1957, today it is a historical re-stage. But the ingredients are the same: unique cars, enthusiastic spectators, 1,400 kilometers from North to South and back on the mist beautiful roads in Italy.
As a tribute to this amazing race, Ferrari put 140 models from 1958 until today on an impressive trip from Brescia to Rome and back. The first car starting the race was a 1986 328 GTS (race number 501) and every 20 seconds another car has started the race.

The 2011 edition of the Ferrari Racing Days at Laguna Seca was supposed to be a fun day of merry-making amongst owners of the Prancing Horse.
The weekend-long event featured a number of races involving cars from the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, including that of the new 458 Italia, as well as the FXX and the 599 XX.
Unfortunately, one owner of a rare Ferrari FXX didn’t have as good a weekend as his contemporaries after crashing his supercar out on the infamous ’Corkscrew’ section of the racetrack. While the damage doesn’t appear to be as serious as it should have been - FXX models are not meant for collisions - the dings and scratches are still noticeable enough to leave a pretty big dent in the owner’s wallet.
He could probably still afford paying for the damage done to his street-illegal sports car, but for a vehicle that could fetch millions of dollars in the market, the owner of this FXX should probably take good care of his prized stallion the next time he takes it out on the race track.
Stop the press! On May 21st 2011 RM Auction has featured one of the most impressive cars of all the time: a Ferrari 500 TRC Spider. The car was estimated to an impressive €2.600.000-€3.300.000 (or about $3,600,000 to $4,700,000 at the current exchange rates) and sold for a total of €2.800.000 - or about $3,990,000. This was one of the finest examples in existence with known ownership and successful racing history. The car is rarer than 250 TR and 250 GTO.
The 500 TRC was one of the most aesthetically beautiful, brilliantly engineered and efficient sports racing cars offered by Ferrari. It was revealed in 1957 and in the same year it claimed an impressive victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Another 500 TRC claimed a class win at the 1958 Targa Florio.
The 500 TRC was a modified version of the 500 TR (Testa Rossa) revealed in 1956 as a successor to the 500 Mondial. The car was created in order to obey the new FIA regulations that were introduced for the 1957 season.
Seeing Fernando Alonso behind the wheel of a Ferrari model is no real surprise. After all this is what he is paid for. But his latest "conquest" was the Ferrari 458 Italia as a celebration of the extension of his Formula 1 contract with Ferrari to 2016.

Any time multiple Ferraris can be found together in the same place is exciting; when there is a reported $100,000,000 worth of Ferraris, its downright spectacular! This weekend a collection of vintage and late model Ferraris will be showcased on the famed Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, CA. The Ferrari Club of North America is putting on the event and it will be open to the public for your viewing pleasure. In attendance last year were nearly 100 vintage Ferrari models covering the entirety of Colorado Boulevard for several blocks.
Ferrari has always been known to create the most innovative and spectacular sports cars the world has ever seen. For the most part, only the super rich can afford the rarer and prized models, but this weekend will give the average Joe a chance to see them all. In attendance last year was a Pebble Beach Councours winner - 250 Series I Cabriolet - and other best in show cars such as the Agnelli 400 SA which came from the Museum in Maranello.
While Pininfarina is busy designing models for Ferrari, concept designer Peter Norris is taking a break from his job in the video games and entertainment industry to design a future luxury sports car concept that is "clean, unfussy, elegant and fast." These attributes led him to the Pininfarina Coupe Concept, a front engined model combined with a rear wheel drive system.
Norris’ design inspiration for the Pininfarina Coupe Concept came from the love of his very own Fiat Coupe 16v Turbo with some Ferrari lines thrown in to polish it over. The Pininfarina Coupe’s look is characterized by the ultra low roofline and the accentuated front and rear fenders. The sleek profile is exaggerated further with large wheels that visually shorten the height of the sports car. At the back of the Pininfarina are a set of C-shaped LED taillights.
When talking about his concept, Peter Norris said: "much of my work is focused strongly on science fiction and the distant future, but with this project I wanted to create an elegant and unfussy design with classic lines that could be on the road today."
“The Pininfarina styling inside as much as outside just oozes with Italian flair and really was, and still is different to anything else on the road. Some people have referred to it as a “baby Ferrari”.
Somehow we don’t see a luxury sports car like this toting around the 190 HP 2.0L 16V Turbo engine as seen on the Fiat Coupe, but since the Pininfarina Coupe Concept was also inspired by Ferrari, we’d love to see something along the lines of the 458 Italia’s 570 HP 4,499 cc V8 engine. Not a likely scenario, but we can dream.
When anyone first looks at the images provided, it would be really easy to venture a guess that this particular Ferrari 458 Italia owner just couldn’t wait for the Spyder version to debut. Unfortunately, the reality of this crash is much more tragic.
A right-hand drive 458 Italia in the UK got into a little altercation with a truck and apparently, the fire department had to remove the roof to free the driver. Up until now, we can chalk this up to driver error, but it seems the driver of the Ferrari suffered an aneurysm right before the crash and is currently in intensive care. He had received his Ferrari 458 Italia just a few hours earlier.
It’s really easy to blame the driver when beautiful models such as this are completely destroyed, but in this case, it’s a complete tragedy all around. After the series of fires that occurred with the 458 Italia when it first came out, we’re beginning to think that the car is cursed. Let’s just hope for all the Italia owners out there that this is not true.
After teasing us for quite a while now, Ferrari has finally revealed the official details on their new successor for the 612 Scaglietti. Called the FF - an acronym for Ferrari Four (four seats and four-wheel drive), the new model is the company’s most powerful, versatile four-seater ever, as well as its first ever four-wheel drive car.
The concept car was designed by Pininfarina, and according to Ferrari "the new car represents not so much an evolution as a true revolution." The new model will deliver "unprecedented level an extremely sporty, high-performance character with incredible versatility, superb comfort and sophisticated elegance, guaranteeing both driver and passengers an absolutely unique driving experience."
The new Ferrari FF GT sports car concept made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and a production version will follow by 2012.
UPDATE 03/14/2011: If the new Ferrari FF happens to be in your future acquisitions list, then you should try the configurator Ferrari has just placed online for it. However, we should warn you, no matter what color you choose, the car won’t look any better.

Exterior and Interior
Designed by Pininfarina, the new Ferrari FF features a shooting brake-like body style, with a front design clearly inspired by the 458 Italia and a large rear hatch. According to Ferrari the new model can comfortably accommodate four people and their luggage, thanks to the best cabin space and boot capacity (450 liters, but up to 800 when rear seats are down).
Now since this is a Ferrari, many people aren’t too optimistic about the rear room available, but Ferrari has stated that the FF will offer ample room for up to four people. They even went as far as to specify that the measurements for the front and rear are 1.95 and 1.85 meters, so accommodating tall passengers won’t be a problem. There will also be a new infotainment system with dual 5-inch screen on the instrument panel, center dash touch screen and an optional third screen positioned in front of the passenger, displaying speed, rpm and gear.
Ferrari will offer a vast array of personalization options and accessories, including six model-specific exterior colors - Scuderia Rosso Corsa, Avorio, Bianco, Blue Dubai, Blue California, Nero, Hanus Gold, Marrone, Blue Tour de France, Rosso Rubino, Grigio Silverstone, Rosso Mugello, Verde Zeltweg, Giallo Modena - and sumptuous interior trim incorporating specially selected and treated aniline leather.
Engine
Under the hood, there is a 6,262 cc direct injection V12 engine that delivers an impressive 660 HP at 8,000 rpm and a peak torque of 503 lbs-ft 6,000 rpm. With this impressive power, the FF will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and will hit a top speed of 208 mph.
Combined with a transaxle dual-clutch F1 gearbox, the engine has a fuel economy of 15,4 l/100 km, the equivalent of a CO2 emission of 360 g/km. The weight-to-power ratio is impressive for this section of market: 2.7 kg/CV. With this impressive output under the hood the FF will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and will be capable of a top speed of 208 mph.
A first ever for a Ferrari model is the new four-wheel drive system (4RM). It weighs 50% less than a conventional four-wheel drive system, maintaining perfect weight distribution (53% over the rear axle). Completely integrated with the car’s electronic dynamic control systems, the four-wheel drive technology delivers record levels of performance on all terrains and in all conditions via continuous and intelligent predictive torque distribution to all four wheels. The FF is also equipped with the latest magnetorheological damping system (SCM3), as well as the most recent development in carbon-ceramic brakes from Brembo.
When Can I Buy One?
Now that the prototype FF has made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari will start preparing the production version. However, we don’t expect it to go on sale before the end of 2012. Rumors say the price will be in the $700K area.
Competition
The current market doesn’t offer much in the shooting-brake coupe department, but there are lots of four-door GTs out there: the Porsche Panamera, the Maserati Quattroporte, and the Mercedes-Benz CLS->Maserati Quattroporte are just a few. Of course, this is a totally different car market, with completely different buyers. Not to mention all of them are less powerful and much cheaper than the FF. The only upperhand the FF has is that it is a Ferrari. That carries major pull in the auto market.
Ferrari will unveil at the Paris Auto Show the special edition SA Aperta, an open-top version of the now famous 599. The model comes to celebrate Pininfarina’s 80th anniversary and will be limited to only 80 units.
The SA Aperta is powered by a V12 engine that delivers an impressive 670 HP. It features a low-slung windscreen, a redesigned chassis. Its profile arches back from the A-post to two aerodynamic fins beautifully integrating the two roll-bars which themselves cleverly mimic the outline of the seats.
The interior gets sophisticated materials, trim and colors used throughout. Ferrari announced that each SA Aperta will be an unique model.
In the official press release Ferrari said: "The SA APERTA is a true roadster which allows its occupants to enjoy the superlative emotions afforded by our signature front-engined V12 architecture in a completely open-top setting. In fact, it has just a light soft top designed to be resorted to only if the weather gets particularly bad."
UPDATE 05/09/11: The 80-piece Ferrari 599 SA Aperta is about a rare a modern-day Ferrari can get. Introduced last year at the Paris Motor Show in line with Pininfarina’s 80th anniversary, the Italian supercar is the personification of Ferrari limited edition madness. Ferrari is delighted to announce the presentation of the SA APERTA at the Paris International Motor Show 2010. This is a special series model of which a strictly limited number of just 80 will be built. All have already been sold. Ferrari chose to build 80 SA APERTAs in celebration of Pininfarina’s 80th anniversary. The SA nomenclature also pays homage to both Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina whose company and work have been linked to the most successful road-going cars ever built at Maranello.

The chassis has been redesigned to deliver a standard of stiffness comparable to that of a closed berlinetta and there is a negligible weight difference also, thanks to work done on the chassis structure.

Plans for a face-lifted version of the Ferrari 599 was supposed to take shape in the next 18 months, but Ferrari’s latest model, the FF, has proven to be quite a hit. In fact, it’s such a hit that the Italian automaker has dropped plans of a face-lifted version of the 599 in favor of a replacement model.
The soon-to-be successor of the Ferrari 599 will be derived from the FF and will boast of unquestioned performance numbers. For starters, we’re talking a 700-horsepower, V12 engine plus top-level fuel efficiency. Other details surrounding the successor to the 599 include an aluminum frame that’s made up of around 20 different alloys to go with some composite panels. The supercar will also feature a multi-link rear axle with a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle, a method that Ferrari has previously implemented on some of its past models, including the California, the 458 Italia, and the aforementioned FF.
In essence, the 599 successor is being prepared to be sportier, more powerful, and more track-oriented than the FF. Something tells us that this won’t be the last time we’re going to hear about the successor of the 599 before it makes its debut in the latter part of 2012.
We’re getting used to seeing all kinds of names for the many different tuning projects completed by SR Auto Group and each one gets more promising with its powerful and aggressive title. The latest kit to come out of the Vancouver based firm is for the Ferrari 458 Italia and is called "Zeus." Since it’s named after the "Father of Gods and Men" himself, we fully expected a god-like package and SR Auto delivers with a vehicle that "roams the town with its thunderous roar that claims the concrete pavement as its home."
That "thunderous roar" they are talking about escapes the 458 Italia’s 570 HP 4,499 cc V8 engine from the new Akrapovic exhaust system. In addition to the added growl, the sports car also gets a stronger look supplied by a gloss black roof combined with a Novitec Aero kit The aero kit includes a front lip spoiler, side skirts, rear skirts, and a rear lip spoiler. Its stance was intensified with a new set of lowering springs. Finishing off the look is a new set of Forgiato Aguzzo wheels, 21" at front and 22" at the rear.
We may not ever get the chance to roam this world as a God, but at least now SR Auto Group has given us the opportunity to drive around in one.
When Ferrari launches a new generation sports car on the market, everyone is well aware that they should expect at least three versions: a coupe, a spyder, and a Scuderia. We’ve already had our fill of the Ferrari 458 Italia Coupe and have some idea as to the Spyder version, but this new rendering of a Scuderia model got us thinking. What should we expect from Ferrari’s most fiery version of their newest sports car?
If this rendering from Milanno ArtWorks is any indication as to the design of the Scuderia, then we can expect a much more aggressive design illustrated by the sharp edges of the bumper followed by the sharp edge design of the front lights. Since the Scuderia name is synonymous with weight reduction, expect a weight loss similar to that of the 430 Scuderia, which lost about 220 lbs compared to the standard model. This will be done with a mostly aluminum body, since Ferrari has already made it clear that the would stick to this material other than using carbon fiber like the competition.
Power for the newest Scuderia monster may come from a turbocharged V8 that will push out anywhere from 590 HP to 700 HP. At one point, Ferrari boss, Luca di Montezemolo, said that a 458 Scuderia would not be produced because the 458 Italia was just so advanced, so if rumors are circulating that a Scuderia will follow, then we expect to see a power output that will blow our minds. The only problem is, we won’t see it until at least the end of 2013.
Pininfarina and Ferrari are two companies in the automotive industry that live and breathe pure excellence. Match them up with one of the most luxurious events of the year - the Villa d Este Concorso D’Eleganza - and the outcome is a one-off model based on either the 599 GTB Fiorano or the P540 Superfast Aperta (pictured).
Rivaling previous years’ debuts like the BMW M1 Homage and the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa by Zagato, the Ferrari Super America 45 by Pininfarina specially requested by a client from New York. It is described as a "convertible, 6 cilindri, 6000 ccm" model. While details are still scarce, the official press release says the following:
"A recent and fascinating trend in the rarefied world of top end Ferrari collectors is the commissioning of one off bespoke version of high end models from Italian coach builders. Several ‘special clients’ have approached Pininfarina (and others) in recent years to build uniquely styled cars, an idea that goes back to the fifties went customers like film director Roberto Rossellini had a special car built for his wife, Ingrid Bergman. The Villa d Este is the natural setting for the exposure of such special vehicles and as well as the Glickenhaus P4/5 this year we have this very special Ferrari Super America belong to the New York."

UPDATE 05/19/2011: Ferrari has unveiled the first official details on the Superamerica 45 - another one-off model that will make its world debut this weekend at the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza. The model will be distinguished by a carbon-fiber rotating hard-top with a rear screen, body colored rear buttresses, double air vents on the front wing, a specific chromed front grille and special burnished aluminum A-pillars, wing mirrors, and door handles. The model will be painted in an exclusive Blu Antille, contrasting with darker blue on the front splitter, side skirts, and rear diffuser. For the interior, the Superamerica 45 gets Cuoio leather trim and Blu Scuro carbon fiber details, plus the latest-generation touch-screen infotainment system.

The Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari is no doubt the most powerful Fiat 500 in the line-up. It is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged T-Jet engine that delivers a total of 180 HP, a significant increase over the 500’s standard 101 HP. But, as usual, there is always someone out there who believes that any car can be improved, and Italian tuner Romeo Ferraris has taken on that challenge with the Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari.
Romeo Ferraris got their hands on two of the limited edition Tributo Ferraris so they could tinker around with their insides. Starting off with the original project’s 1.4-liter turbocharged T-Jet engine, Romeo Ferraris used new camshafts, a new turbine, oversize injectors, a remapped ECU and a new exhaust system complete with sports catalyst and dual rear exit to get the Tributo Ferrari up to 260 HP. That’s a 80 HP increase over the standard 180 HP.
Abarth had originally left the 500’s power output unchanged, but they did strengthen its suspension and braking system. Since the handling was already there, the tuner just opted for installing a new Brembo brake system to handle the extra juice.
As far as looks are concerned, no aesthetic modifications needed here. The original Fiat 500 used for the project was already Ferrari red before Abarth added performance-enhanced and Ferrari-designed 17-inch alloy wheels, carbon fiber door mirrors, and Xenon headlights. With the car looking that good already, Romeo just had to power it up to get a good response.
The two Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari models will be offered to the American market, but there are no words just yet on the update’s prices. We’re guessing that, with only two units up for grabs, there will be a lot of disappointed folks out there.
The history of the 612 Scaglietti started in 2004 when Ferrari chose it as a successor for the smaller 456 M. It was designed as a 4 seater gran tourer with adequate space in the rear seats for adults. But, if we’re going to be honest, the 612 Scaglietti features the most out-dated design in all of the current Ferrari line-up.
Thankfully, Ferrari is coming to the rescue with a successor to the Scaglietti. This new model will be unveiled next March at the Geneva Motor Show with sales beginning in the summer of 2011. Prices are said to be in the 300,000 euro area.
Ferrari has already confirmed that the next 612 model will feature lots of modifications, including a gasoline-hybrid technology which is a system Ferrari developed from the KERS system it currently uses in Formula One race cars. This system was already previewed by the 599 GTB Fiorano HY-KERS concept unveiled earlier this year.
Wheelsandmore’s focus has shifted from Mercedes SLR and SLS AMG to a brand with a bit more speed: Ferrari. For the Maranello-based automaker, the German tuner has chosen the F430 to dazzle us with their exterior mods and engine updates.
The engine performance kit includes a recalibrated engine control unit and a lightweight, handmade stainless steel exhaust system. The new exhaust system even comes with a stainless steel rear silencer with valve flaps that can be operated with the use of a remote control allowing the driver to adjust the awesome sound shooting out with the touch of a button. The exhaust system alone produces an extra 20hp for the Ferrari, but altogether the modifications increase the horsepower from a standard 490hp to 537hp. Top speed was also increased to 202mph.
Next to the engine upgrade, the package also includes a new set of black colored wheels with a fine silver race stripe sizing, 8,5x20 front (tires 235/30/20) and 11,5x20 (tires 325/25/20) at the rear. The performance package is completed by a race suitable stainless steel coilover with adjustable compression and rebound.
But that’s just the start of the program. Wheelsandmore has also worked on theF430 Scuderia by adding full exhaust system contending manifolds, sportcatalysts, and a valve controlled rear muffler. Combined with an upgrade of the electronic control units you can get an impressive 565hp and 550 lb-ft.

But for those willing to pay, it can still be done, and some of the oldest names in coachbuilding are still in operation. So when architect and home builder Bob Gittleman decided that he wanted something different for his car, it was possible to make that happen.
