2016 Nissan Crossover Concept

Having already launched two new production cars, the2016 Nissan Titan XD and the 2016 Nissan Maxima , earlier in 2015, Nissan will use the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show to showcase a new concept car . The announcement comes with a shadowy teaser depicting a sporty front fascia, but no actual information whatsoever on the concept car or the production model to follow. At least for now.
Quoting successful sales from crossovers such as theJuke Qashqai , and the X-Trail , Nissan says this new concept car will help the brand "continue to innovate and move the bar higher," as well as deliver a "new way to feel driving excitement." We won’t find out what that means until the actual vehicle breaks cover in Detroit , but there are at least two scenarios on the table.
Judging by the sporty design and the fact that the 2015 Nissan Juke is in need of a makeover, this study could very well preview the second-generation Juke. On the other hand, Autocar says the concept could wear the famous Z badge and replace the current370Z , which will be discontinued by 2017. Although it doesn’t make much sense for Nissan to dilute its Z legacy with a crossover, the current market seems like the perfect setting for a small sports crossover.
Keep it locked here for more details on this concept car, but until Nissan spills the beans, make sure you have a look at my speculative piece below.

Exterior

Although the brief statement is rather cryptic, the only teaser released thus far is a bit more revealing, showing a sporty front end featuring Nissan’s current styling language with features seen on recent concept cars. Highlighted by the trademark V-shaped grille, the nose is quite aggressive, thanks to its sharp lines and creases, as well as a pair of slender, boomerang-shaped headlamps. What makes the concept particularly interesting is that it is finished in a two-tone livery featuring bright-red fenders, a black hood, and a black nose. The silver insert in the grille complements the LED headlamps.
Though the rest of the vehicle isn’t visible in this photo, the way the roof line arches above the doors suggests it could have a coupe body style.
The black hood reminds me of certain versions of the classic 1970-1978 Datsun 240Z , an iconic member of Nissan’s Z-badged family of sports cars , but this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Crossover Concept previews such a model. But until Nissan gives us the full details, we’re pretty much stuck with a teaser and a bold rumor.

Interior

There’s no indication as to how the crossover concept will look on the inside, but if previous Nissan concepts are any indication, it should sports a lot of futuristic cues. I expect it to feature a sporty dashboard with simple lines, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and a selection of lively colors on the seats and the door panels. New technology that will eventually make it into production cars could also be in there.

Drivetrain

The concept’s drivetrain is also a mystery; it could be either a turbocharged gasoline engine, likely a four-cylinder, or a hybrid drivetrain. Whatever the case, it should generate in excess of 200 horsepower given its sporty appearance. Should this study preview a Z-badged crossover, I wouldn’t be surprised it motivation came from the 2014 Nissan Juke Nismo RS’ 1.6-liter four-banger.

Conclusion

With no actual info to run by, I can’t yet draw a proper conclusion here, but the teaser hints at a sporty concept car that will likely attract a lot of attention. The possibility of this concept previewing a Z car, which would bring a radical shift in Nissan’s strategy for its performance vehicles, makes it that much more important and intriguing, but jumping to conclusions at this point is a bit premature. There’s also the possibility that this concept remains just a study or that it previews the next-generation Juke. Either way, I’m anxious to find out what it has in stock. If the new Maxima is any indication, the production model that will follow this concept (given it will happen, of course) should be pretty wild, at least in terms of design.
Stay tuned for an update from the Frankfurt Motor Show.
