A little while ago, a leaked document revealed everything there was to know about Lamborghini’s future line-up, and confirmed what a lot of us already knew; the Aventador will soon get a Spyder version. Scheduled to debut in 2012, the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Spyder will adopt many of the characteristics of the coupe, but altered for a wind-in-your-hair kind of look. Being since we are rather impatient when it comes to hot new vehicles, we just had to draw up the future of the Aventador.
The standard Aventador is equipped with a powerful V12 engine producing 700 HP at 8,250 rpm and 509 lb-ft at 5,500 rpm. This same powerhouse will be dropped into the Spyder, whose added soft top roof will pack on a few more pounds and slow down the performance figures just a tad. That translates into a 0-60mph sprint time a shade over the coupe’s 2.9 seconds.
Exterior
Like with the coupe version, the upcoming Aventador Spyder will take its design inspiration from both the Reventon and the Sesto Elemento concept. Expect to see the same glossy, black frames and bi-xenon headlamps up front, as well as all of the aerodynamic elements integrated into the body shell form, from the front spoiler to the rear diffuser. The rear of the vehicle will get a lower diffuser and rear LED lights that create the same shape as the ones out front. The rear spoiler on the Spyder version will be controlled electronically just as in the coupe.
Interior
The interior of the Aventador Spyder will more than likely mirror that of the coupe with its large LCD screen for the instrumentation and a completely independent system and LCD screen which will control the stereo and navigation functions.
Covering the inside of the vehicle will be full leather in either single-color or two-tone combinations. Lamborghini’s Ad Personam individualization program will allow each owner to personalize their supercar to their exact specifications.
Standard equipment will include ABS, electronic brake distribution, anti-slip control, speed-dependent servo-tronic steering, hill start assist and, of course, ESP stability control. The Drive Select System enables vehicle characteristics (engine, transmission, differential, stability control, steering) to be set in accordance with individual driver preferences in one of three modes – Strada (road), Sport and Corsa (track).
Engine
Under the hood, Lamborghini will place the same 6.5-liter V12 engine with an AWD layout that produces 700 HP at 8,250 rpm and 509 lb-ft at 5,500 rpm. Since the roadster version will add a few extra pounds thanks to the soft-top roof, the 0 to 60 mph sprint will be made in around 3.3 seconds, while top speed won’t be higher than 210 mph.
When Can I Buy One?
The new Aventador Spyder will make its official debut in early 2012, with sales beginning later that year. The Coupe is priced at $379,700, so the Spyder version should come with a price tag of around $400,000.
Competition
Finding a competitor for the Aventador Spyder would be quite a task at the moment. However, before the Aventador Spyder makes its debut in 2012, Pagani will have plenty of time to introduce its roadster version for their recently launched Huayra. The model will be powered by the same V12 engine with 700 HP and 730 lbs-ft of torque found in the coupe version, while top speed will be in the 220 mph area.
McLaren has also promised a more powerful version of their latest supercar, the MP4-12C. While the current supercar is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 592hp at 7,000rpm and 443 lb-ft. of torque between 3,000 and 7,000rpm, the future version is expected to see at least 700 HP under the hood.
These two supercars are both great competitors for the Aventador Spyder. We’ll know more about our preferences when each of the automakers debut their rides.
